According to the Wisconsin Historical Society’s official marker list, Marker #8 is in Ashland County, Wisconsin. The site marks the location of a crude structure of interlaced tree branches erected in 1659 by the French traders Pierre Radisson and Medart Groseilliers, who came from Montreal to Chequamegon Bay. This was one of the earliest European fur trade posts in North America and part of the Radisson–Groseilliers expedition that also explored the Great Lakes region.
